It’s important for family members to know two routes out of every room in the house in case there is ever a fire. Practicing those routes is just as important. Home exit drills save lives. The first step is to develop an emergency escape plan:
- Appoint someone in the family to act as Fire Chief.
- Determine a primary route and an emergency route out of every room in the house.
- Decide on a meeting place outside the house such as near the mailbox.
- Draw a picture of each floor in your home showing the rooms, doors, windows, and halls. Color the regular escape routes black and the emergency escape routes red. Place copies of the picture where everyone can see them.
Practicing the Drill
After you have an emergency escape plan, the next step is the drill itself:
- Decide what the signal will be to start the emergency exit drill.
- Everyone goes to their own bedrooms.
- The Fire Chief gives the signal for the drill to begin.
- Another family member repeats the signal.
- Everyone closes the door between their room and their primary escape route.
- Everyone leaves the house by their emergency exit route.
- The Fire Chief brings the family together again. The Family Fire Chief stresses the importance of remaining calm, closing doors, and testing doors to closed rooms for heat before opening them.
- Review the escape route picture with everyone, verifying that the escape routes are the best ways out of the house.

Past - Present
As is the City of Navasota, the Navasota Fire Department is rich in history and tradition. The Fire Department was formed sometime in 1886 by a group of local businessmen seeing the need for an organized department to handle the cities fires and emergencies. They called themselves the Navasota Fire Boys with a Hook and Ladder Company and Hose Company. They eventually ventured out to serve other areas including all of Grimes County and parts of Washington and Brazos Counties. This continued until the 1960s and 1970s as other towns started their own departments. The Navasota Fire Department continues to serve its citizens in the City of Navasota, its ETJ, the Navasota Industrial Park and approximately 110 square miles of Rural Grimes County.
The Navasota Fire Department is a city chartered municipal Fire Department with twenty full-time and part-time firefighting employees working a 48 hours on 96 hours off rotating shift staffing one engine company with one Captain and two firefighters and is supported by a group of ten volunteers. The department responds to approximately 1300 calls per year including residential and commercial structure fires, grass and woods fires, vehicle fires, motor vehicle accidents, motor vehicle accidents with entrapments, Technical Rescues, Hazmat, and EMS first response.
The Fire Department is responsible for preparing for, responding to, and mitigating fire, rescue, medical and environmental emergencies and Emergency Management Coordination through proactive education, prevention, and safe emergency response services. The Fire Chief is responsible for management and direction of departmental policies and guidelines, fiscal responsibility of the department budget, shift schedules, special operations and emergency management; as well as filling a shift and responding to emergency calls. The assistant chiefs and operations are responsible for emergency responses, training, fire prevention, public education, and Tactical Evaluation Assessment Plans of public buildings.

You can request documents or information from any government agency, like school districts, police departments, cities, or counties. The PIA request, however, can only be used for Texas state government. To request information from the federal government, use the FOIA request.
The government is not required to release some information. For example, a school district can only release information about a child to the child’s parent. The police cannot release information about ongoing investigations. If someone has threatened to sue the government, the government may withhold information until the lawsuit is over. The federal government may withhold information related to national security.
You can request documents using the form below or you can send a letter describing what your want to the City Secretary at P.O. Box 910 Navasota, TX 77868.
Response will be made within ten (10) business days of date of request, unless records are not easily accessible, whereby the City shall notify requestor when the records will be available.
There is copy charges of $0.10 per page unless there are more than fifty pages, in which case the City has the right to charge $15.00 per hour for labor. The City may require a deposit or bond if the estimated charge for producing copies of the requested records exceeds $100.00.

Skate Park
100 Stadium Drive
Navasota, TX 77868
Operation:
This park remains entirely free and open daily, with no limit on hours access outside of the City’s park curfew. There will be no direct supervision of the park so skate at your own risk, however, the Parks & Recreation staff offices are located directly across the street and the Department anticipates the need to monitor the park equipment and park aesthetics in order to maintain a high quality facility.
Rules:
Efforts have been made to maintain rules to keep the park safe, with the idea in mind that skating, like any other sport, does carry some risk of injury. Please spread the word that this park is an open space in our community. Please help us minimize the trash by throwing yours away.
The rules are posted at the site and are as follows:
- No bicycles allowed.
- All skaters should wear, at a minimum, safety equipment which includes elbow pads, helmets and proper shoes.
- Children under the age of 10 should be supervised by an adult.
In 2005, a group of youth skateboarders approached the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board with a petition for a public skateboard park. After four years, several fundraisers, two grants, and a land donation, the City of Navasota has contracted with Ideal Skateparks of Austin for the design and construction of a public concrete skateboard park. This park was built for skaters, by skaters. Every effort was made to get community, skater and stakeholder input in the design.
There are thousands of deaths each year across the United States due to fires, but fire is not what usually causes these deaths. It is the smoke that fire produces that causes death.
Common Misconceptions
Many people think that they will be able to smell the smoke while they are sleeping or feel the heat from the fire. Our bodies are wonderfully made and we have a great cooling system that does not require us to do anything to maintain our body temperature. Our body senses the heat and immediately our natural cooling system goes to work. When we finally sense the heat is too great, the time to escape has almost been eliminated.
Also our noses that do a wonderful job of smelling while we are awake have a sleep mode of their own. When we finally do smell the smoke we have taken in quite a bit of the poisonous gases caused by fire and our ability to get out has been greatly diminished. Smoke detectors give us an early warning increasing the amount of time we have to get out of the house alive. The smoke detectors must be placed where they can alert us and tested frequently to ensure functionality.

Many detectors now can be part of the house wiring system with a battery back up or have a battery only to power them. The detectors with batteries need to be checked often and the battery replaced every six months. We recommend replacing the battery when we change our clocks in the spring and fall to help us remember to do it.
You can also vacuum it to keep the dust from causing false alarms. When the battery does wear out it will emit a chirp to let you know the battery is dying. Just replace the battery and it will function fine again. Like everything, detectors will wear out and need to be replaced. If when you test the alarm, it makes a strange sound (weoooweoo) or no sound. If it makes no sound, it is time to replace the battery. If, once you change the battery, there is still no sound or a strange sound replace the detector.

There are two major types of smoke detectors. The first is an ionization detector that contains a small amount of radioactive material. This material sends a small electrical current to an electrode across a gap. When smoke enters the gap between these electrodes it causes a disturbance in the current flow. This disturbance causes the detector to go into alarm.
Photoelectric Detector
The second type of smoke detector is a photoelectric detector. This type has a beam of light emitted inside the detector and a photocell. When smoke enters this detector, the beam of light is deflected and this deflection is detected by the photocell causing the alarm to sound.
Placement
We recommend having a detector in each sleeping area and the hallway that leads from these rooms to an exit and on each floor or level in the home. Smoke detectors also go into alarm at different times so having many and different types of detectors will give you the best chance of an early warning.
